About

This work is for my third year project in Computer and Business Studies at Warwick University. This means that one way or another, I really have to finish this thing! Work began back in October, and the film should be complete in March. I'm also looking into machinima in general as part of this work, investigating how it began and developed, and what kind of potential it may have as a creative medium. For the uninitiated, by machinima I mean digital filmaking that uses computer games to animate everything (there are links to some good examples of machinima at its best in the links section). Put another way, its filmaking for people who don't have enough friends to act and hold cameras at the same time; you just can't multitask with everything as a way around your non existant social circle.

To get this thing done, I'm going to need to utilise some skills I think I possess, and learn a bunch more. I'll be making the maps/locations (kinda like set design), animating the actors and moving the cameras using programming and such (a bit like directing) and writing the script (scriptwriting, but more plagarism). Only some of that stuff is actually getting marked. It's not something I can do entirely on my own however, and I've already recieved a lot of help. Voice actors to bring the thing to life, and some help in other areas are being pursued.

I have some background in areas related to this project, which should help a little; Five small, live action productions with friends (8 Bucks Productions); a 3 part machinima series with the Jedi Knight 2 engine (Team Corellia); numerous terrible scripts.

I am using the popular PC game Half-Life 2 to animate this film. Famed for its lifelike graphics, super-realistic physics system and general modifiability, it seemed a likely choice from the start. Check the downloads section for the small pilot animation I did to make sure I could animate a few lines of dialogue. There's a lot of stuff about the backstory for the film, as the script is all completed. Location construction is underway right now, so expect more screenshots soon.
